Dysfunctional Globalists win the Battle in Seattle
by Ray Tapajna - Flat World Fables
The Battle in Seattle movie shows who won in the Economic Arena of Globalization and Free Trade- The movie just leaves a little of the steam out of the kettle while President Obama acts as if it never happened
The 2007 movie Battle in Seattle was about the protests against Globalism in Seattle in 1999.
Supposedly, it ends with the message that the protestors succeeded in closing down the global and WTO meetings. It does not tell the real story about who really won the final war in the global economic arena. It lets a little steam out of the kettle but that is about all it does. The Globalists just took the protest as a learning experience and established ways to block and steer futher protests away from the center of their efforts. It is obvious the protests did very little to stop the surge of Globalization and Free Trade. Now our economies based on making money on money instead of making things are burning out with President Obama marrying big government with big money ignoring the core of the protests and acting as it never happened. The surge of Globalism goes on.
Everyone should still see the movie for what it is worth but it is obvious not much was changed. The same international elite groupings combining governments, trans- national corporations and the news outlets still control our economic lives outside of any real democratic process.
Workers still have no voice in the process of Globalization and Free Trade and are labeled as misfits, malcontents and troublemakers
This is a letter we wrote that was published in the Cleveland Plain Dealer in August, 2000 and tells how the message of the protestors was not heard.
Most opponents of globalism are peaceful
In his letter to the editor, Craig Miller says the anti-WTO protestors in Philadelphia were misfits, malcontents and troublemakers. Some may be just that, and this is the part that makes the news, unfortunately. ( The real story remains untold )
However, the frustration fo American workers losing the American Dream in a silent depression receives very little notice. Both major parties are ignoring it. ( and for the most part still do- President Clinton and President Bush hid it from the people with their "wag the dog" or pre-emptive wars. Now President Obama hides the issues behind a mock attempt at health reform. ) The unemployment statistics are reported without any question, even though there is no way to provide accurate statistics, given the growth of part-time, temporary and contract jobs in recent years. ( We claim that one third of all American workers are unemployer or underemployed especially if compared with unemployment reporting twenty to thirty years ago. )
When major newspapers fill their front sections with costly retail ads that advertise products made in the sweatshops around the world, readers should wonder how any objective reporting can be possible. ( We previously wrote about workers shopping their way out of their jobs and now see journalists writing themselves out of theirs as many newspapers now are fading away because they did not tell it like it is. )
At the anti-WTO protests in Seattle, ( in 1999 ) , there were many peaceful demonstrators, but their message was not heard. Globalism and international military actions go on without balanced reporting. If you want to talk about violence, this is the place to start.
Unfortunately, those who have good jobs go on about their lives with blinder on, and the media follow their lead living off the misery surrounding globalism and consumerism. ( and it still goes on today. You can have all the town hall meetings and tea party gatherings but if the Battle in Seattle keeps being a mute issue not much will change. The Globalists just will put the center of their meetings blocks away from any protests.)
