Economic Crisis is now getting personal
By Ray Tapajna - The eye of our economic storms
The editorial cartoon was first published in 1995 and it represents the eye of our economic storms for our times.
Now it is 1937 all over again with no one knowing what to do about our economic mess. Back then they were telling people that the Depression was over but still there was no real recovery. Today , the Federal Reserve, international and financial groups and President Obama tell us the recession is over and the economy is recovering. The recession, we are told, ended two years ago. Yet everyone seemingly has someone their family unemployed or underemployed and know better.
It is nothing personal - it's only business
We heard this saying in many Mafia movies and now we can apply it in a different way in real life. The dark statistics are no longer out there affecting someone else but now are very personal with almost every family in the USA being affected by the economic crisis in some way.
Reportedly, only 58.2 percent of adults are employed. It relates to what was reported back in 1995. It was reported that about 50 percent of our total human resources are not being used.
Paul Krugman , winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Economics and a columnist for the New York Times, reports that not only a vast numbers of Americans unemployed or underemployed, for the first time since the Great Depression, many American workers are facing the prospect of long term or permanent unemployment.
The statistics are coming home to our own front door steps as we see someone close to us out of a job without any hope of finding a job or trying something on their own.
Many Conservatives tell us we have to eliminate deficit spending but ignore the events that led up to our fiscal mess. Many of these people who call for cuts in the entitlement programs do not talk about a vast population that once supplied the funds for government services are no longer enjoying an income.
As Paul Krugman says, we need people to admit they were wrong about many things. The big money globalist free traders should admit that they are cause of our economic demise and start from there. Liberals must also finally admit that NAFTA and GATT free trade agreements were passed by a Democrat President and a Democrat controlled congress. Both sides were riding in the same boat that left workers drowning without a life saver.
They have to stop saying it is nothing personal but only business -because it is now very personal.
By the way, Paul Krugman does not mention the fact that free trade is the major cause of our economic crisis. I doubt if he said anything about it 15 years ago either. It seems like mixing free trade in the economic stew is still a no no.

Only about 50 percent of U.S. human resources were reported being used back then and not much as changed. Today we now have a generation of permanent unemployed workers
