NAFTA came and stole their lives from them

It's time to curse the darkness rather than light one little candle

MEXICO CITY - The dark night of the soul for Mexican farmers. " For 15 years, Mexican farmers have feared the day when the last import protections end for the country's ancestral crops of corn and beans. Mexico has plunged deeply into a model of globalized agriculture where farmers are ill-prepared to compete, and even people who don't farm for a living are suffering. Nobody knows that better than Vicente Martinez, who grows corn, beans and some coffee in the green mountains of Tepetlan, Veracruz. In July, his daughter Felictas died trying to cross the desert to enter the... "

Farmers in Mexico find it impossible to compete under NAFTA trade agreement.

When US Congress passed NAFTA in 1993, it gave Mexican farmers 15 years to find ways to compete in the global economic arena. They never found a way .

Here is what NAFTA has caused and who it effects::

Vicente Martinez, grew corn, beans and some coffee in the green mountains in Veracruz, Mexico. In July 2007, his daughter died trying to cross the desert to enter the U.S.
Martinez blames the NAFTA free trade agreement and the ceasing of government support programs that leaves only the option of migrating to America. His daugther Felictas found no work in their farming town, other than cleaning houses for little pay. Martinez says his daughter took the only option she had left and left to enter the U.S. She had four children to support. She was abandoned by a people smuggler in Arizona.

It wasn't supposed to be this way when NAFTA was passed but this is the reality of its effects. The Mexican subsistant living farmers say the only ones ready for free trade are 20 big agribusinesses corporations.

All Mexican farming is important for environmental and cultural reasons. Ten Mexican Bishops proclaimed NAFTA and free trade - cultural death. For Martinez' daughter Felictas
it ended in real death.

A few years ealier, on the other side of the border, 300,000 family farms closed down due to NAFTA and free trade in the U.S. There were no borders for the American farmers to cross. ( This most likely caused many real untimely deaths too- see link below .) The U.S. food trade deficit now totals more than $400 million dollars after all this .

This happens while American Catholic Bishops say we need migrant workers instead of consulting with their peers south of the border.

Our economy based on making money on money instead of making and growing things has burned out. The Bible tells us that Jesus only got very angry one time. It happened when he confronted the money changers in the temple. Too many in the church ignore this and skirt around the main issue of our times. Free trade brings not only cultural death but real death too.

The Wall Street Journal reports there is a surge in sucicides in the US. See Thanksgiving is time for hope

NAFTA also eliminated American jobs by sending high paid factory labor to Mexico for cheaper wages and a cheaper product. I saw it in the auto industry where cars were constructed in the US and sent to Mexico to put in seatbelts. The seatbelts were the first thing to pose a problem in automobiles.

NAFTA in part was meant to eliminate illegal immigration. It is a 16 year old failure that doesn't benefit anybody in any way.

Therefore ALL of North America has been battered by this Free Trade Agreement that only benefits the rich as they take advantage of the poor and make the rest of us poor!
