Reviewer of Al Gore's book, tell ways for you to help save the earth but ignore the real problems about pollution:
FACT: The average auto spews a pound of carbon dioxide. Cutting down on driving just 20 miles a week would save about 1,000 pounds of the
greenhouse gas a year. Also they suggest sharing riders to work. What they do not tell you-
Go to a Walmart or other big box stores and look at all the products that come from far away places. Just think how much pollution is in every item that has to travel for thousand s of miles by sea, air, rail and trucks spewing tons of carbon dioxide with old merchant ships infecting the seas. Think too about all the extra protection material and containers, it takes to bring the products to the local market. Add to that the uncontrolled dirty manufacturing required to produce the product. Rather than think just about cutting back on driving, think about where all the component parts of the auto came from thousands of miles away.
Add it all up and compare it to cutting down on driving 20 miles a week and see how that is just a minor savings compared to all the other pollution caused by free trade.
They tell you this but..........
FACT: The review tells us that every year 12 million barrels of oil are used to produce 100 billion plastic shopping bags that take centuries to decompose. They tell us the fix is to get reusable tote bags for our grocery shopping etc. They do not tell us anything about the products inside the bag. For example, take all the frozen food and micowavable items and plug in how the packaging pollutes our environment with many more containers than the plastic bag going to our landfills with some microwave containers taking more time than the plastic bags take to decompose. And no one mentions how all the electronic gadgets, computers and printers are throw away buys. It is cheaper to buy a new one than repair the old. We live in a throw away consumer world based dirty manufactured products that have to travel for thousands of miles to get to our local stores.
FACT: The government provides money for people to buy energy saving products but never tell us that these items are produced in dirty manufacturing factories overseas. Note our link above about dirty energy saving light bulbs or see

FACT : They tell us the average meal travels well over 1,200 miles by truck, ship, rail or plane, producing thousands of pounds of carbon emissions before it reaches your table. They say the FIX is to shop at farmers' markets and food co-ops and fight global warming with your knife and fork . Now this is a good idea but they ignore the fact that the same situation applys to every product we buy - including automobiles, gadgets and computers. Free trade is the culprit and Vice President Gore is one of the major participants in this global economic free trade that pollutes the earth more than all the simple solutions , presented in his book and movie.
No one tells us that government subsidized corn and soy products compete directly with local farming and transnational agricultural corporations control these products and not only put out local farming but subsistent living farmers throughout the world.
No one tells us that only local value added economies in balanced geopolitical settings work no matter what the commodity is. Shopping local should apply to everything we eat or use and not only for particular situations that do not change much of anything. Our economies based on making money on money instead of making or growing things are burning out. Free trade and globalization are not only polluting the earth but are also economically polluting our communities too.
