The American Dream betrayed by money changers and big government
We live in an age where centralized governments act as dealers and brokers with the money changers of the world. When the Free Trade agreements were passed workers and small businesses were assured that they would be better off and those who lost their jobs and businesses due to Free Trade would be compensated. This never happened. Instead the money changers who drove Globalization and Free Trade were bailed out when economies based on making money instead of making things burned out.
The only time Jesus got angry was when he saw what the money changers were doing in the temple. The workday is also a temple. The free traders ignore what Adam Smith maintained as a priority. He held workers as something sacred and the core of all society. The free traders and money changers have deflated the value of workers and degraded human dignity and get paid for doing. President Obama gets paid to bail out those who caused the economic crisis while ignoring the suffering of workers.
The corporate leaders of Citibank apologize for their failures to recognize the coming of their part in the economic crisis but nothing is said about the financial and credit card industry charging usury interest rates. Workers who lost their jobs who thought they would find another job for the same pay, used their credit cards to survive but few found any new jobs of equal value. As a result, bankrupticies broke all records. Reportedly 47 percent of all small business owners maxed out their credit cards too trying to stay afloat with many finding themselves deep into usury interest rates which were impossible to overcome.
In our state, we have a candidate for governor who supported Free Trade when he was in Congress and later became a highly paid executive for one of the top financial houses that got a bail out. How can he relate to the needs of the people. The current governor who is running for re-election, tried to collect undue taxes sending out threatening letters to small businesses and even those who went out of business.
Meanwhile, shoppers continue to shop their ways out of their jobs saying it is only human nature to shop for the cheapest price no matter what and they ignore the unethical conditions behind the products they use or consume.
And in our city, they plant an apple orchard on lots where homes once stood.
All the promises of Free Trade have failed and still no one seems to want to talk about it.
