Payroll tax a purple bruised issue - both parties hide the facts
Payroll Tax is an economic ethical problem
The Payroll Tax is a tax on workers and acts as a flat tax on the working poor and a tariff on work itself.
The politicians debate cutting taxes but never include the cruelest tax of all- Payroll tax. This has to paid on all the dollars a worker makes while those who enjoy interest income, pay no payroll tax on their earnings.
Let's go deeper into the problem that no politician wants to talk about. It relates to a level playing field in the global economic arena too. Many of the things we use are made in far away places that to not have the overhead of payroll tax. In the U.S. it represents more than a 15 percent overhead for businesses and self employed contractors too. It forces many to go underground in order to compete for a job and work. Payroll tax is now a tariff on work itself and acts as a flat tax on the new working poor class. In 1950 theses taxes were only 3 percent. And these taxes have increased up 3 percent per decade. Now it is 15.3 percent.
Worst of all, the Social Security tax is used like any other tax in the General Fund. The Social Security Trust Fund consists only of an IOU by the Federal Goverment. Payroll taxes bring in nearly as much money as income taxes do.
[B]Three in every four workers now pay more in payroll taxes than they to in income taxes.
It is something of an invisible tax. And President Clinton admitted, he used the Social Security money to support his Balkan wars.
It is a purle issue with both the red states Republicans and the blue states Democrats participate in this subsitute regressive tax to fund general government spending from everything fro aircraft carriers to office supplies.
*based on Matthew Miller articles
In the global economic arena, the payroll tax acts as a tariff on American workers. Companies save money if they move off shore to avoid this tax. They escape a 15 percent overhead by moving their production outside of the USA automatically.
In the end, any tax cut, may put more money into circulation but any extra money spent at the retail level quickly fans out to the places the products are made and do not stay in the U.S. to grow our economy. In the end, the Free Enterprise system is fractured.
To fill the voids in our economy and tax systems, some politicians are calling for a VAT or National Sales Tax of up to 23 percent on consumption. This would be just another tariff on workers and labor.
