Let your voice be heard

By Ray Tapajna, Artist and Editor at Tapart News and Art that Talks

For the next few posts we will explore what it takes to stand up and let your voice be heard

In the presidential election, " Joe the Plumber " spoke his mind to Presidential Candidate Obama and became an instant celebrity. Now he is pursuing more ways in voicing his concerns about the American Dream.

Here are 5 fundamentals of effective speaking.

1. It has to come from the heart and we can all speak about a personal experience related to the topic we wish to present. Act confident knowing you have earned the right to speak.
We all have special areas of knowlege no matter what are formal education background may be. We also all know about the experiences of people we know. We have our early years and upbringing with all the struggles and challenges of life. What are the strong convictions that followed these challenges.

2. Be enthusisastic about your topic - It is best if you can get lost in the subject without trying. Defend your ideas with conviction and earnestness. Let it be an experience you can relive with your audience. Sometimes having a list of possible questions you may receive will also help you with delivering your message better.

3. Have a real desire to share your topic. Let it be one that benefits your listeners too.
It should be appropriate to the occasion where you are audience-centered rather than self centered. Realize the audience wants to hear your ideas. Act friendly with your audience and think in conversational tones and not in a formal speech pattern. Do not be bother about those who do not appear to be interested. Do not let any chatter in the audience affect you.

4. Prepare properly.
It is never too early to prepare your thoughts on any matter. Decide on the specific message you want to get across to the audience. Gather more material and information than you need. Organize your ideas and make an outline and have notes ready, but do not memorize. Think of the interesting details to include and how to include your audience in those details.
Decide what the best approach should be. Think you will successfully deliver your message. Give yourself a pep talk in the process and practice what you want to say and the points you want to make with family and friends. It always pays to listen or observe reactions on an on going basis. Compare the different responses you get and adjust.

5. Be confident but going into the speech , get your mind off yourself. Give yourself an inspiration of what benefits you will leave with your listeners. Realize most audiences are as friendly as you are friendly to them. Have faith in your beliefs and faith in the audiences ability to understand what you have to say. Approach the audience with an air of anticipation. Accept any opportunity to tell your full or partial story. Think of it as a practice session. Concentrate on what confidence will do for you. And note that some nervousness helps you in the delivery. Everyone wants to feel like they are part of what you are saying in one way or another.

In our following posts, we will get into more particulars - just start practicing all of the above by yourself or plugged some of these things into your normal conversations.
