Dignity sacrificed at the altar of greed
The anti-chain store movement is growing in towns across the USA with towns like McCall, Idaho; Port Townsend, Washington, Ogunquite, Maine and Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, passing laws that restrict chain stores and mass merchandizing. In the areas of Cape Cod and nearyby islands, Nantucket restricted chain stores in its downtown in 2006 with other nearby towns doing the same thing. People say their towns would not be the same if Home Depot, McDonalds and Walmart would come in. And they are right. Walmart has closed down many small towns and every time free trade shuts down a factory or farm, it leaves behind burn out communities. And in our major cities there are miles of main streets full of empty stores and factories. Many streets look like a third world country. Outside of Youngstown Ohio, there are miles of shopping centers with many now having many empty stores while inside Youngstown impoverished communities try to survive.
Liberatarians say all this will eventually work out and you can not stifle competition but as we have experienced the devastation of small business for years, we know that there is no end to it as long as some of the common rules of the free enterprise system are not observed. Personally, I have lived through several situations with the business or company having the most money selling their products under costs until they put out as much surrounding competition as possible and then raise the prices to survive.
I was with one company when a new company came backed by a giant corporation cut us out of the market. Then a few years later, in my own business , another company who were also backed by a giant corporation cut us out of the market. After they seemingly had control of the market, the found that doing business with a proper markup was impossible for there is always another company in the making to put them out of business. The two companies merged to survive but still could not make it on their own trying to do business in a legitimate way.
I also saw many companies who were just in business to manipulate their stock values by selling under costs to increase sales and growth just to increase the value of their stock.
Then free trade came where the value of workers and labor was attacked which added to internal mess by foreign intervention where all kinds of funny money and subsidies control the game.
One of the biggest problems behind all this is people who assume that competition is based on fair practices but obviously raw Capitalism is out of control and those who do not want big government to interfere or partake as brokers and dealers are many who say let the free market rule the game.
It won't work. We relish our sports on all levels but every sport has rules, referees and umpires to insure a level playing field. However the sport of commerce has very little of this and free trade has exploded all level playing fields. Free trade and globalization have brought us only fields of broken dreams with the rich and diminishing middle class living off the poor.
And our economies based on making money on money instead of making or farming things are burning out with the Free Traders pouring money on the fire to put it out. It is an endless road to no where.
