What is this thing called love (LINK)
April 15th 2008 00:35
It is obvious, human beings have all the basic capacities of lower forms of life and there are two activities that distinquishes them from other life forms. These two activities are intelligence and volition.
We find first of all that man can form abstract ideas, that he can know immaterial things, such as honor, beauty, goodness and the like; he can recognize relations between things; he can make judgements on the affairs of life; he can reason from the unknown; he can become arware of and study his own activity; he has a special kind of knowlege that is beyond the mere sense of knowlege of animals.
We have defintions and terms of things we will never experience but know these things exist. For example, we can never experience perfect love because we know we are imperfect beings. This drives us to find out what it is all about and we look to places where this perfect love may exist.
Which brings us to our power to choose and we know something that is called a conscience tells us what is the best way - the right way and the wrong way to search for perfect love.
We find our human nature a crippled one and conclude there is a certain duality in human nature. Altough human nature is in reality one nature, it has different facilities to distinguish
levels in human nature. Man can know things somewhat as animals do by sensation: he can also know them in a higher way by intelligence. Man can desire things as animals do but he can desire things in a higher way. Man therefore has a higher and lower cognition, a higher and lower volition. Man is said to have a higher nature: intellectual knowlege and rational will; and a lower nature: sense knowlege and sense attraction. Human nature is wonderful composite of all that is best in the universe of visible natures.
The sense appetite tends towards the pleasant. The rational appetite tends toward the truly good. What is pleasant is not always something that is good and something that is good is not always pleasant. Sleep is both pleasant and good. But in many things, the sense appetite seeks things the intellect knows as bad. Doing drugs can be very pleasant but the intellect knows it is a destructive habit to avoid. Thus there is occasionally a direct conflict between the two levels of appetite in the human being. This conflict can lead to a life of detours.
In the pursuit of bettering the personality and character, this conflict must be kept in mind . The higher must rule the lower, not the lower rule the higher. After all, we are aimed at happiness and we must know how to make the right choices to reach this state. To ignore these facts, just takes us on a very long detour. The more detours we take the more difficult it is to find our way back. We can never attain perfection in this life but at least we can find as many way as possible to keep on the right path in pursuing it. Love endures. All outside of love does not. The biblical passage applys - do unto others has you would have them do to you. It is not only biblical but practical too.
